The Great Marvel Adventure series (1906- 1935) was a syndicated Jules Vernelike series of stories authored by "Roy Rockwood" that eventually reached nine volumes. Most (but not all) of these Edisonades were written by the indefatigueable Howard R. Garis (of Uncle Wiggly fame), before he began to write the Tom SWift books. The Great Marvel Adventures were never quite as popular as Tom Swift. But they were a touch better written-- and much more imaginative and colorful. The series was filled with interesting inventions (which were always breaking down at inopportune times), and lots of action and hairbreath escapes. In forty adventures, Tom Swift never made it into outer space. But the heroes of the Great Marvel stories were soon zooming off to Mars, the Moon, and Venus. The series manages to avoid much of the "Empire politics" found in many Edisonades of the day that make them politically offensive by modern standards. There is a bit of racial stereotyping common for pulp writing at the turn of the century-- but then, you can't have everything.
_Through the Air to the North Pole; or, The Wonderful Cruise of the Electronic Monarch_ (1906) is the first volume in the Edward Stratemeyer syndicated series, and I must say that it is filled with thrill-a-minute, action-packed episodes, with lots of cliffhanging scenes at the end of chapters. Orphans Mark Darrow and Jack Samson take to the road as tramps and hop a freight train. The train goes "runaway" and wrecks. They are rescued from the wreckage by Professor Amos Henderso and his black servant Washington. In no time at all, they are hustled aboard a marvelous electric powered dirigible and are flying to the North Pole. Along the way, they have adventures with screaming eagles, fierce polar bears, walruses, hostile "Equimaux," and other perils. You can't take any of this too seriously, but it is easy to see why many affictionadoes rate the Great Marvel Adventures as worthy predecessors to Carl Claudy's science fiction juveniles of the thirties.
